Our History
History of Indiana Filmmakers Network
Indiana Filmmakers Network Inc. (IFN) is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) educational charitable organization committed to supporting film, media, theater, and the cinematic arts across the state of Indiana. First conceived for a one-time event in 1996, and later established in late 1998 as an on-going grassroots initiative in Indianapolis, IFN began as a small, passionate group of area professionals dedicated to fostering connection, learning, and collaboration among local filmmakers and creatives. In 2008, a new board of directors was formed, expanding the organization’s vision and outreach. This led to the gradual development of additional hubs and affiliates throughout the state.
Over the past 25 years, IFN has grown into one of the Midwest’s most influential film and media collectives. In 2016, the organization underwent a formal rebranding and was officially incorporated as a nonprofit, solidifying its commitment to long-term growth and service to Indiana’s creative communities.
Today, IFN connects and supports more than 13,000 filmmakers, artists, actors, and media professionals through social media, alongside a core of hundreds of dues-paying members who actively participate in and benefit from IFN’s programs, services, and collaborative environment. IFN is best sustained by you!
The organization embraces all forms of cinematic storytelling—from narrative and documentary filmmaking to theater, media arts, music, and digital content creation. IFN’s mission is to provide Indiana creatives with the tools, knowledge, and network they need to bring their visions to life. Through workshops, networking opportunities, educational events, and statewide collaborations, IFN serves as a launchpad for emerging talent and a platform for industry veterans alike.
In 2022, IFN was honored by SAG-AFTRA Chicago as one of the largest cinematic arts collectives in the Midwest—an acknowledgment of both its reach and its impact. IFN has also been invited by neighboring state governments to advise on the development of similar grassroots creative communities, further cementing its role as a leader in regional arts advancement.
Far more than just an online community, IFN is a dynamic nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of the cinematic arts in Indiana.
Our programming includes hands-on workshops, statewide filmmaker meetups, media mixers, panel discussions, community productions, resources and initiatives that foster innovation, professional growth, and sustainable creative careers.
Indiana Filmmakers Network Inc. remains at the forefront of empowering storytellers, building vibrant creative communities, and strengthening the infrastructure for film and media throughout the state. As we look ahead, IFN continues to grow and adapt—supporting a diverse, inclusive, and resilient cinematic arts ecosystem in Indiana.

Our Role in Advancing Indiana’s Film Industry
Indiana Filmmakers Network Inc. (IFN) plays a vital role in strengthening and advancing Indiana’s film and media industry. As a longtime advocate for creative professionals across the state, IFN was proud to support the Indiana Media Production Alliance (IMPA) in its successful campaign to establish the state’s media production tax incentive—a crucial step in making Indiana a competitive destination for film and television production.
In response to that legislative victory and its continued expansion over the following years, IFN has hosted free onboarding sessions to help filmmakers, businesses, and creative professionals understand and access these new incentives. By equipping local talent with the tools and knowledge to take full advantage of available benefits, IFN ensures that Indiana creatives are well-positioned to thrive in the evolving industry landscape.
Through Visit Indiana, Film Indy, Film Indiana, and Indiana Creates (IEDC) – IFN helps to promote Indiana as a premier destination for film and media production. Through these collaborations, IFN highlights the state’s diverse locations, skilled workforce, production-friendly communities, its creative economy and growing infrastructure.
As we expand our internal production resource directory and support services, IFN remains a trusted and proactive source for filmmakers looking to work in Indiana. We are committed to helping creatives make the most of current opportunities while shaping a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving film industry in the Hoosier State.
Our Ongoing Mission
As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, IFN continues to expand its influence and impact on the state’s creative economy. Our core mission remains the same: to connect and empower Hoosiers to bring their creative visions to life. Through our various programs, initiatives, and partnerships, we are working to foster a thriving cinematic arts ecosystem in Indiana. Some of our current initiatives include:

Our History and Legacy
The Indiana Filmmakers Network was initially established in 1998 by a coalition of film and media professionals, in collaboration with the Indiana Film Commission, to offer networking opportunities and support for emerging filmmakers. Since then, IFN has consistently expanded its reach, growing from a small group into an influential statewide network with multiple hubs and affiliates across Indiana.
In 2008, a new board formed and the Indiana Film Database was created, marking the beginning of a more formalized organizational structure. Over the years, IFN has expanded its footprint across the state, offering educational programs, partnering with major industry events, and facilitating growth within the local film community.
Despite challenges—including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic—IFN has continued to innovate and adapt, launching new initiatives such as the Independent Cinematic Arts Network (ICAN), Project: Hindsight (an IFN podcast), and new film funds to support the next generation of filmmakers. As a result, IFN remains a driving force behind Indiana’s thriving creative sector.
Looking Ahead: Forging the Future of Indiana’s Cinematic Arts
As we step boldly into the next chapter, the Indiana Filmmakers Network is not just looking ahead—we’re imagining, designing, and building a new creative frontier.
Our commitment is clear: to ignite opportunity, spark innovation, and champion the visionaries shaping Indiana’s film, media, and storytelling landscape. With plans underway to expand immersive educational programs, launch new professional development pathways, and deepen statewide collaborations, IFN is evolving into a catalyst for a more vibrant, connected, and sustainable creative economy.
But this future isn’t ours alone—it belongs to every Hoosier creator with a story to tell, a vision to share, or a dream waiting to take shape.
We invite you to step into the scene.
